Learning to Be

"This is just for being you," she said to me and handed me a card. Inside it said "your calm presence here is needed and appreciated."

This happened just now, just as I put my fingers to the keys to figure out how to start this blog. God is too funny. #whenGodillustratesyourpoint

I'm writing this for all of the people who are wondering what God wants them to do with their lives. For those who are struggling to find their passion or struggling to create passion for the things that surround them on a daily basis. For those who fear that their lives may not be counting for much and who stress over whether or not they're impacting the world to the utmost. For those who feel like they can't peacefully move forward in anything because they're just not sure if its God's will, just not sure if they're on the right path, and just not sure if they missed the mark sometime long ago. For those who feel like they might be in the wilderness right now and not know it.

I am that person on an almost daily basis.
Most of the people my age seem to be, too.

Looking at this struggle, I think one of the biggest workings of the enemy in this generation is that he's taking a people who want with all of their hearts to serve the Lord and he's telling them that they're not doing it right. The confusion and fear is immobilizing us, twisting simple service into ideas that to do the right thing for God requires a title and an elaborate plan.
We feel like who we are and where we are isn't enough.
We feel like God's just waiting for us to "get it."
Like He's waiting for us to change who we are.
Like we're no good to Him as we are.

It's a big big lie, but its oh so effective.

In the midst of this struggle God has been showing me in small ways over the past month that He has already created us to be who He wants us to be, and that we needn't waste time trying to re-create ourselves into something that WE think we should be. He did the job already. He created the people that He needs who have the skills that He needs and He has placed them right where He needs them to be. Everything from your desires to your personality is useful to Him.

We spend so much time trying to find out what to do, but what God wants us to do isn't necessarily a job at a church and or a grand event. The reality is God's purpose for us is not a fixed point, but more of a sliding scale on which all of our actions can be placed. You walk it out by being a light in the job you're at, wherever that job is. You walk out your calling by doing the things you're interested in - God will bring opportunities for those interests to bless other people.

You glorify Him the most when you just are the person He made you to be. I see so many of us trying to be the same as somebody else because they think that that person has it figured out. But God didn't make you to be them, He made you to be you - and you can't be what you're called to be if you're trying to be something else.

Today, I'm overthinking like crazy and writing this didn't solve the worry for me, and I'm sure that reading it won't solve yours either. But even if it hasn't taken hold of me yet, I know it to be true. So today, just focus on what's before you and around you. Press on, keep submitting to God, and continue to surrender your ideas of what you should be and do. He is faithful and He will carry us through.
